The body of Tohid Karim, a first-year pharmacy student from Malda, was recovered from the hostel of the Jakir Hossain Institute of Pharmacy College, located in Jangipur, on the night of August 13. The college is reportedly connected to a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA, which has further fueled suspicions and outrage surrounding the incident.
Tohid, known for his academic brilliance, was found dead under mysterious circumstances, with his body lying frozen on the hostel floor. His family has alleged foul play, claiming that Tohid was murdered in a planned manner. His father, Rezaul Karim, a lorry driver, reported that he had spoken to Tohid the previous night, and his son had shown no signs of distress or depression.
Rezaul's concerns deepened when he discovered that the local police at Raghunathganj police station allegedly refused to file a written complaint, citing that they would only accept it after the post-mortem report. Additionally, the college authorities and police reportedly discouraged the family from informing the media about the incident.
The villagers of Tohid's hometown, Jadupur in English Bazar, Malda, have expressed their disbelief and anger over the student's death. They have warned that if the police administration fails to take action, they will organize protests similar to those following the RG Kar incident.
Senaul Islam, a panchayat member of Jadupur, echoed the family's demand for justice, alleging that the police are attempting to cover up the incident due to the college's connection with the local TMC MLA. The family has called for a departmental inquiry, insisting that their son was murdered and that justice must be served.
